Massyl Mallem
Chemical Engineering (2023)
Major and anticipated graduation date: Chemical Engineering 2023
Academic Background: I’m studying chemical engineering with a minor in chemistry and a minor in entrepreneurship and technology innovation. During my sophomore year, I discovered the field of intellectual property and immediately fell in love because it combined my interests in both law and science.
Research Interests: The most appealing area of research for me is electrochemistry and the intersection of electrical and chemical engineering. Specifically, I’m very passionate about renewable energy technologies, and I’ve had 4 research positions in this field. I worked at UConn’s Center for Clean Energy Engineering (C2E2) on green hydrogen production using electrolysis. I also did an REU at Duke University’s electrical engineering department where I worked on semiconductor technologies for solar cells. Right now, I’m doing research at the UConn Institute of Materials Science (IMS) on multifunctional nanostructured materials in Dr. Sun’s lab, and dielectric polymers for electric vehicles and electromagnetic aircraft launch systems (EMALS) in Dr. Sotzing’s lab. (pls reach out if u want to get involved w undergrad research!!)
Professional Experience: I have about 1 year’s worth of intellectual property experience through a full-time Co-Op I did at Ahlstrom-Munksjo, and a summer internship at UConn TCS. My experience in IP and my passion for entrepreneurship culminated in founding a tech startup, called PatentPlus. We’re a software-as-a-service (SaaS) company deploying the latest AI models to make patent searching easier and more efficient.
Interests/Hobbies: In my free time, I love to stay active through fitness and athletics. My favorite sports are soccer, swimming, and martial arts (muay thai and jujitsu). You can also find me snowboarding during winter time, and cliff-diving in the summer!
